Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery at the Health Sciences Centre, University of Manitoba, provides comprehensive subspecialized management and treatment for the full spectrum of complex neurovascular disorders of the brain and spinal cord.

The Pediatric Neurosurgery program at the University of Manitoba is comprised of three pediatric neurosurgeons: Dr. Annie Drapeau (Pediatric Neurosurgery Service Lead), Dr. Patrick McDonald (Section Head, Neurosurgery) and Dr. Colin Kazina (Child Health Surgery Director). These surgeons practice at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital, which services all of Manitoba, but also includes patient referrals from Northern Ontario and Nunavut.

The Section of Neurosurgery at the Health Sciences Centre has a strong skull base and neuro-oncology program that utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach and employs the latest technology.

Gamma knife surgery (GKS), a minimally invasive neurosurgical procedure, is usually used to treat benign and some malignant brain tumours, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and disorders of abnormal function such as trigeminal neuralgia (TN).

Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), or tic douloureux, is one of the most painful afflictions known. It is characterized by episodes of excruciating stabbing or electrical shock-like pains which are confined to one side of the face.

The Health Sciences Centre is home to the Winnipeg Spine Program, a multidisciplinary team of neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists and physician assistants trained to treat complex spinal disorders.

Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring (IONM) uses electrophysiological techniques to assess the integrity of the nervous system in patients undergoing surgery where there is a risk for iatrogenic damage.

Functional neurosurgery integrates stereotactic and minimally-invasive neurosurgical techniques for the focused treatment of movement-related disorders and pain.
