The Pediatric Neurosurgery program at the University of Manitoba is comprised of three pediatric neurosurgeons: Dr. Annie Drapeau (Pediatric Neurosurgery Service Lead), Dr. Patrick McDonald (Section Head, Neurosurgery) and Dr. Colin Kazina (Child Health Surgery Director). These surgeons practice at the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital, which services all of Manitoba, but also includes patient referrals from Northern Ontario and Nunavut. All three surgeons underwent additional pediatric neurosurgery training at programs accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pediatric Neurosurgery Fellowships.
This program offers the full complement of surgical services for the work-up and treatment of neurosurgical disorders in children. Multidisciplinary team members who participate in the care of neurosurgical pediatric patients at our centre include pediatric plastic surgeons (craniofacial trained), ENT surgeons, pediatric general surgeons, pediatric-trained intensivists, emergency physicians, neurologists, pediatricians, neuro-oncologists, neuroradiologists, neuropsychologists, neurophysiologists, social workers, nurses, therapists and technicians, and many others.
Fully-independent programs in pediatric neuro-oncology, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, craniofacial disorders, spina bifida and spasticity offer the entire range of neurosurgical care for children afflicted with such disorders. On average, our team performs approximately 120-150 neurosurgical operations on a yearly basis. In terms of surgical techniques, our neurosurgeons are well-versed in image-guided neurosurgical techniques (including frameless/ stereotaxy), neuro-endoscopy and microneurosurgery. The Children’s Hospital Operating Room is fully equipped with some of the most cutting-edge surgical equipment allowing for any and all children to be taken care of in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The proximity of the Winnipeg Children’s Hospital to the Health Sciences Centre allows for easy collaboration with our adult colleagues and other expertise such as Gamma Knife radiosurgery and interventional neuroradiology for example.
All three pediatric neurosurgeons are actively involved in research, education and organized professional neurosurgery societies, at local, national and international levels. More details regarding individual surgeons interests and professional development are available in their individual Faculty Biography.
